LJA PEER MEDIATION

WHAT IS IT?

Peer mediation is a process where trained student mediators, with the supervision of certified counselors, help their peers talk out and resolve interpersonal conflicts. Mediators do not take sides or make decisions for their peers. Mediators aim to facilitate a private, safe and confidential discussion to help the disputants find their own solutions to the conflict.

Peer mediation is voluntary so the students with conflicts want to work with mediators. Peer mediation provides students with an opportunity to learn how to resolve conflicts in a mutually respectful way. While the goal of mediation is to help peers reach mutual agreements, sometimes a resolution may not be reached. In such cases, the student mediators will establish clearly defined boundaries and expectations to help ensure that the conflict does not continue beyond mediation.

WHO CAN USE THIS SERVICE?

All LJA secondary students have access to this service. Students who choose to participate in the peer mediation process, however, must be willing to:

  • Solve the problem

  • Be honest

  • Allow the other person to present his or her version of events without interruption

  • Be polite

  • Be respectful to all persons involved in the mediation process

  • Do his or her part in carrying out the agreed-upon solution

  • Keep the process confidential

HOW TO REQUEST A MEDIATION?

Students can request a mediation by contacting a peer mediator, counselor, teacher and/or administrator. Mediation can also be scheduled here.

WHO WILL BE YOUR MEDIATOR?

Are you wondering who will be your mediator? Are you worried about a conflict of interest? Our team will always aim to provide a neutral, third-party mediator (i.e., someone that is not involved in the conflict). If you have a preference for a specific mediator, you may request them when applying for a mediation. *Remember: you don't want your mediator to be someone you are close with, as this may make it more difficult for them to remain impartial when helping both disputants reach mutual agreements to resolve a conflict.
